Element #5: #Failure (Storyboard, Video, Handout, Presentations, & Peer Feedback)

See our Course Calendar for assignments & due dates.

Element Overview: In this Course Element, you will  again work in groups to produce a 4-minute video that explores the theme of failure we examined in Element. Your video will include anecdotes about the value of failure from 8-12 people from different fields/disciplines who are in various stages in their academic or professional careers. You will splice together your interview footage with other relevant footage of your own creation to create a video that is cohesive, thought-provoking, engaging, and hopefully at least somewhat humorous or light-hearted.

The goal of this Course Element is to build on what you learned in Course Element #4 as you continue to think critically and creatively about the value of failure and to disseminate what you’ve learned in an innovative, thought-provoking, engaging multimedia format. The intended audience for the video should be fellow students whom you would like to encourage to embrace failure.

Element Time Frame: Weeks 9 – 12

Writing Tasks – #Failure VideoYour group will create a storyboard in which you map out a detailed plan for your video, including interview subjects and relevant information about their anecdotes. You will produce, edit, finalize, and post the video to YouTube, using tools and resources available at CI. Your group will present the video to the class and include a handout that highlights the main “takeaways” from your work.

Speaking Tasks – #Failure Video: You will deliver several group presentations throughout this Course Element. These presentations should be prepared but have an “extemporaneous” tone. The first will ask your group to present your storyboard to the class for feedback (10 minutes). Next, your group will present your video rough cut for peer review (10 minutes). You will also share the “Roses, Buds, and Thorns” from your rough cut (5 minutes). You will then present your final video and handout to the class (10 minutes). Lastly, your group will reflect on your “Lasting Impression” from the work that went into your #Failure Video (5 minutes).

Assessment: This Course Element will be evaluated holistically, taking into consideration the quality, thoroughness, and timeliness of your storyboard, video rough and final cuts, presentations, and feedback to your peers, as well as peer assessments of your work.
